Yarm1914 believe that Harry Pinnegar was born in Thornaby in 1885. His Father was William who was a puddler in an Iron works. In 1891 when Harry was 6 he lived at 8 Wellington Street in Thornaby with his father, mother Emily, brothers William J 18 who was a labourer in an Iron works, sisters Rose Wardrobe 20 and her son Harry who had just been born, Alice 15, Joyce Eliza 11 and Margaret 6. By 1901 his father had died and the family had moved to 10 James street in Thornaby. Rose had married George Fairbairn and set up a family at 4 William Street in Thornaby. Harry Wardrobe was still living with his grandmother. Alice had married and was still living with her mother. She is now Alice McCulloch. Also in the house were Margaret and Harry Wardrobe. In 1911 the family had not moved. Margaret had married Peter Greatbatch in 1901 and was living with her three sons with Albert and Annie Lowe in 13 Stafford place in Thornaby. Rosa had reverted to her maiden name but the family were otherwise unchanged. He married Louisa Baldridge in Thornaby parish church in September 1911. Louisa was born in Yarm and living in Appleton Wiske. They had their first child Louisa M on 24 May 1913 whilst living in Thornaby. They then moved to Silver Street in Yarm where Harry Hollyoake was born on 31 May 1915 and never saw his father.
Harry enlisted on 9 September 1914. His records record him as Harry Pinnegar, Harry Pinnegan and Harry Finnegar. He was posted to France immediately and saw promotion to Lance Corporal a year later on 18 September 1915 and then to Corporal 22 August 1916. He suffered from Absess, Scabies and Eczema in 1915, wounded on 13 February 1916 returning to his batallion on 14 April 1916. He was shot in the shoulder and chest on 25 Septemver 1916 and died at 12.00 noon on 3 October 1916. His widow was living at 28 St James Street in Thornaby in February 1917 and had moved to 23 Hind Street Stockton by 1919 where she met and married Colin Maxwell and moved to teh wireless station in Stockton-on-Tees. This was a ‘Y’ station built in 1916 and operated by the Royal Navy to monitor messages from German Zeppelins and U boats. It formed part of the Bletchley Park story.
